SPACESHIP ANIMATION

ROLES/CONTRIBUTIONS

SOLO PROJECT

- 3D Asset Creation

- Creating infrastructure 1 to 1

- VFX

- Animation

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This animation was a test of several different skills I have developed up until this point, along with introducing me to animation in Maya.

I created a spaceship that flies through a scene containing a building and windmill which I created almost exactly as they are seen in images.

FINAL RENDER

THE PROCESS

SPACESHIP CONCEPT

The original concept for the spaceship was a mix between the smooth spaceships from Star Wars and the muscle car beefiness from cars featured in Mad Max.

In the end I scrapped the Mad Max aesthetic as there wasn't enough time for me to flesh out that design.

FINISHED SPACESHIP MODEL

The finished model of the spaceship to be animated.

It ended up being very similar to the Star Wars slick spaceships, but with it's own unique edginess to it.

HARD SURFACE MODELS

The models for the building and windmill to be put into the scene, and based off of infrastructure from Star Wars.

These were tests of my ability to copy an object from an image and try and create something as close looking as possible to that image.

TEXTURING

The textures for the building, windmill, and spaceship.

The building and the windmill show very realistic looking textures, meanwhile the spaceship has very cartoonish flat texturing to it.

VFX TEST

A test scene for the spaceship taking off, where I played around with the VFX system within Maya.

The spaceship also demonstrates some squash and stretch animation principles to give the animation a very goofy look.

FINAL COMMENTS

This project was my first look at animation through Maya, and so there were a lot of hurdles to overcome with this project. I was, however, satisfied with the progress I was able to make and am extremely happy with how the building and windmill turned out.
